After a few phone calls to Karl and a run up to Bitter Creek for question answering, we finally got started laying track!

The raw materials: rail, ties, and hardware.

Matt and Jon line up the ties for marking the locations of the tie plates.

Jon tacks a tie plate to a tie as Tracy watches.

A tie with tie plate, ready to go...

David tries his hand at tacking tie plates to the ties.

Tracy makes sure the tacks are flush.

Jon and Matt join rail to rail.

Et voila! 30 feet of almost track. The rails aren't screwed to the tie plates yet, but it was still a Kodak moment. All the black tie plate material between the rails will be removed when all the rail screws are in place. The last activity will be putting in the ballast (1/2-inch gravel) and final leveling.
